1. Sit quietly for 5 minutes. Relax. Do not talk or move.
2. Sit down in a chair, keeping your back straight. Keep your feet flat on the floor, do not cross your legs.
3. Rest your arm on a table. Your arm should be at a even level with your heart.
4. Put the cuff on your upper arm. Make sure no clothing is in the way. Wrap it snugly around your arm, about an inch above your elbow, and an inch below your bicep.
5. Press start on the monitor. Stay still and do not talk while the cuff measures your blood pressure.
6. Write down your numbers. Record your top number (systolic), bottom number (diastolic), and your pulse.
7.Wait 1-2 minutes, and take a second reading. Write that one down too, and show your doctor both readings.
Your Reading Top Number (Systolic) Bottom Number (Diastolic)
Normal Less than 120 Less than 80
Elevated 120–129 Less than 80
High (Stage 1) 130–139 80–89
High (Stage 2) 140 or higher 90 or higher
🔴 If your readings are high often, tell your doctor.
Talk to your doctor or nurse if you are unsure how to check your blood pressure or what your numbers mean.
