Back Pain Guide

Understanding the causes and effects of back pain is crucial in treatment and preventative care.

Unfortunately, back pain  typically comes with no objective signs, leaving diagnosis up to the subjective symptoms noticed by the patient. Many causes are normal effects of aging, but can be accelerated or intensified due to injury or poor lifestyle.

It is important to monitor your symptoms so that things don’t get worse.

Key Symptoms:

  • Aching pain
  • A “shooting , burning or stabbing feeling” (Mayo Clinic)
  • Pain that extends down the legs
  • Pain that increases with physical activity
  • Muscle tightness

What can cause back pain?

  • Muscle strains and sprains
  • Spinal Curvature Disorders
    • Abnormal curves in the spine can lead to excess strain on muscles, fatigue, and pain
  • Tumors affecting back muscles or nerves

  • Arthritis
  • Degenerative Disk Syndrome
    • The intervertebral discs in the spine gradually break down, leading to pain, stiffness, and potential nerve compression
  • Other muscle and organ diseases

Prevention

Here are some things you can do to help prevent back pain:

  • Low impact aerobic exercise
    • Such as walking, cycling, swimming
  • Core and back exercises
    • Such as planks and crunches
    • See here for more suggestions:
    • Core Exercises
    • Exercises to help build core strength
  • Maintain a healthy weight (see our Weight Guide for more information)
  • Quit smoking
    • Back pain was estimated to be present in 23.5% of never-smokers, 33.1% of former smokers, and 36.9% of current smokers
  • Maintain good posture
  • Sleep on a firm mattress
  • Wear supportive shoes

Treatment

If you are experiencing back pain, consult a physician first to discuss what treatments may be best for you.

Here are some things you can do to help treat back pain:

  • Continue with light activity as able
    • Exercises including knee rolls, pelvic tilts, single/double knee hugs, and cat camels (video instructions here)
  • Heat therapy
    • Different methods, such as heating pads, warm baths, or wraps  increasing blood flow to the affected area
  • Medications
    • Pain relievers, muscle relaxants (which may help if pain relievers do not)
  • If home care doesn’t work, try visiting a physical therapist for further care.

Don't ignore your Back Pain!

The underlying causes of back pain, if left untreated, can pose serious risks like:

  • Permanent nerve damage - which can interfere with basic motions and daily living
  • Can lead to mental problems such as depression
  • The pain may be linked to a disease (including cancer) which could affect major organs
